Our goals shape the way we see ourselves and those around us. Someone who is goal-oriented is more likely to approach their life and their business positively, which translates to a greater chance of overcoming failures and setbacks.

According to Forbes, studies have shown that when we set goals, we think about what we want in life and are more likely to work towards reaching it. The brain sets out to acquire the new self-image and makes it a part of our identity. By visualizing ourselves where we want to be, we are training our brains to see it as a reality, not just an imaginative thought. When we visualize, we are more likely to make it happen. Writing down your goals is a great way to start.

Thinking about tangible goals 

One major predictor of success is planning goals that are grounded in tangible, solid steps that lead to achievement. Look to experienced leaders to find their proven goal-setting processes. Following their lead will help you understand exactly what you need to do to succeed. Your process could follow a pattern like this:

  • State exactly what you want to achieve in the coming year in the simplest terms possible.
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Look back at your reflections exercise for 2021 and see what you can work on in the new year.
  • Examine all of your resources. For example, use the ASEA Connect App, the Virtual Office,  corporate social media pages, regional sales calls, ASEA Live trainings, and the Corporate Soul podcast to help you organize and stay on track.


Review your mission statement

If you’ve already written your six-word leadership legacy statement or a business ethos, make sure you have those written down somewhere nearby so that you can see them every day. If you haven’t already written them, start there.

Once you’ve reviewed your mission statement, you can map out your goals one at a time. 

  1. Write down the goal
  2. Write why you want to achieve it
  3. List 5 action steps needed to achieve the goal

Once you’ve established a list of goals, create a monthly strategy for each goal and how you will achieve it. How many contacts will you have per day? How many team members will you strive to add to your team each week? What rank do you plan on having by the end of each month?

Keep it positive

It’s important to frame your goals through a positive lens. Think of what you can achieve realistically using your current resources. Don’t overlook the important details. Focus on potential benefits. 

It can be helpful to have an accountability partner to check in with every week to share your wins and struggles. This can be someone on your team or an associate building their own team. They can be the difference between carrying on and giving up when times are tough.

The start of a new year represents a new opportunity. Get off on the right footing by building a comprehensive plan that helps you overcome any obstacles that might come your way. Remember, consistency is the way to tackle anything. Keep at it and share your wins on social media!
