Guest author and ASEA Athlete Mike DiDonato heads Team Unstoppable, a dual Ironman & Racing team working to help put a spotlight on disabilities. The team consists of Mike and his partner, Kyle who was paralyzed in a car accident in 2007.
I compete in road race events. I’ve raced distances of 5k, 10k, half-marathons, sprint-triathlons, Olympic triathlons, and Half-Ironman (70.3) distances. I very seldom do these races by myself. I compete with my good friend Kyle Brodeur. Kyle is paralyzed, so he and I race together with a special wheelchair that is built for speed. We’ve been competing since 2011. Kyle is the heart and soul and I am the arms and legs.
Triathlon For Two
Our most exciting and grueling race has been the Ironman 70.3 triathlon because of the challenges that we face in the swim, bike, and run. For the swim, I put Kyle in a raft, tie a tether around my waist and pull him behind me for 1.2 miles. The challenge is fighting the current that creates resistance for the raft. After the swim, I pick Kyle up out of the raft and carry him to the transition area where I carefully place him in his race chair. The chair is already attached to the back of my bicycle and I pull kyle behind me for 56 miles. The bicycle part of the race is the most challenging. The weight of Kyle, his race chair, me, and my bicycle combined is around 400 pounds, so generating momentum and maintaining a pace for 56 miles can be very difficult.
The final part of the race is the 13.1-mile run. At the transition area, I detach Kyle’s race chair from my bicycle and put the front wheel on the chair and we’re off on the final leg of the race! Even though there is a lot of pain that I endured in our races, getting Kyle across the finish line, seeing his thumb up and a huge smile on his face makes all the pain worth it.
Redox Recovery
ASEA REDOX is a supplement that I use every day for recovery after hard training sessions and endurance races. Recovery is critical especially when we have back to back race events. I feel less fatigue and more endurance since I started using the product. I also use Renu 28, which I rub Renu 28 on my face, neck, and traps every morning after I shower and every evening before bed. I also use it on my quads, hamstrings, and calves before I compete in a race.
My training regimen is nontraditional in the running and triathlon world. I’ve been weight training for over 30 years and I’ve been practicing in the Martial Arts for over 20 years. ASEA products help me to keep competing at the age of 48. Since taking ASEA, Kyle and I are finishing races faster than we ever have been
