The Importance of Hydration

According to Harvard Medical School, a healthy person should consume 30 to 50 ounces of water per day. Drinking water is crucial for maintaining the healthy functioning of all the body’s systems, like your heart, muscles, and brain. Fluids carry all the nutrients we consume to the cells in our body, lubricate our joints, prevent infections, and flush out unhealthy bacteria. This requires that your kidneys and liver have enough fluid to get rid of toxins in our body.

Our bodies are made up of roughly 60% water. When adequately hydrated, sleep, cognition, and general mood tend to be better in adults. The good news is that 20% of the recommended water intake comes from our food, with many foods up to 95% water. Fresh fruits and vegetables like cucumber, lettuce, celery, watermelon, spinach, strawberries, and broccoli are all made up of mostly water. Eating complex, healthy foods causes your body to burn more calories during digestion while also hydrating you.
