About the author: Cody Miller is an Olympic gold medal swimmer from Las Vegas, who has been with the ASEA Athletes team since 2018. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke and a gold medal in the men’s 4 × 100-meter medley relay, swimming the breaststroke leg of the final. Miller has won a total of seven medals in major international competitions: three golds, two silvers, and two bronzes spanning both long and short courses.
Summer 2018 was the lowest point in my professional swimming career. I had a disappointing pro-series season that ultimately ended with an upsetting performance at the U.S. Nationals. I failed to qualify for the World Championships. The culprit of my lackluster season was a major tear in my MCL, a band of tissue in the knee that controls everything and keeps the knee from bending inward.
Having healthy joints and tendons is especially important for an Olympic swimmer like me who spends over 20 hours a week training and swimming in a pool. The majority of the time I’m doing the breaststroke, which is a very unnatural movement and resembles the same movement a frog makes while swimming.
To address the problem, I traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs where the best doctors and specialists in the country ran tests and initially gave me a 12–18 month recovery time frame. It was devastating news. I thought my career could potentially be over. I underwent a tricky surgery in which a doctor punctured my knee a few dozen times and drained excess fluid.
The surgery was successful in repairing the damage, but the long recovery timeline was a major challenge for my competitive spirit. After two months of slow work, I just wasn’t happy with where I was physically. I’d tried just about everything I could think of to support healthy joints and recovery. I’d bought and tried every over-the-counter remedy for joints and aches available, but it was still slow going.
I’ve been a big fan of ASEA REDOX for years in my training recovery and overall health, but this was something different. So I had an idea of taking a different approach to the way I was incorporating ASEA redox technology in my daily regimen.
After making adjustments to my ASEA regimen, I noticed a drastic improvement in my physical therapy sessions, which helped me to complete each session more comfortably. These sessions were vital to my recovery and supporting my healthy joints, so having the energy and ability to get through them helped me get back to training for multiple hours in the pool in just a few more weeks.*
When people ask me what enabled me to overcome such a severe setback, my answer is always the same: I was lucky that I had a team of wonderful people who helped me every day. ASEA redox technology supported my joint health throughout my journey. Even the Olympic specialists I work with to this day are shocked at how fast I was able to recover and climb back to the top of the world rankings.
I worked hard to get back on top and ASEA continues to be a super important tool in my tool belt. What experts initially projected to take 12–18 months I was able to achieve in less than half that time.
